“As the mother of 10 children I can tell you…”

General Conference was this weekend! That’s where the leaders of the church talk to us for two days. It’s 8 hours in all, and once a year it’s an extra 1.5 hours for men in the spring and women in the fall. So I got almost 10 hours of God’s words and it was awesome! The subject line quote is from our prophet, President Nelson, when he was talking to the women. He told as story about how he was so excited while giving a talk in Africa one day that that’s what he said. The audience didn’t notice because the translator corrected his mistake, but he said his wife certainly did. I love President Nelson! He is so full of love and energy and power. I know that he’s the prophet of God, chosen to lead the church at this time. I also know that his counselors and the 12 apostles were chosen by God and they have the keys to speak for Him. I love them all so much and I’m so grateful for their loving guidance in these crazy days.

Last Monday we got to do an escape room! Some ladies from another ward came and set it up for us. The theme was family history and they dressed up for the part and everything. It was a lot of fun and my group finished with 30 seconds left! It was intense.

The rest of the week was just regular missionary work. We had a lesson with the guy we picked up (from the other missionaries) and it was awesome! We talked about the Plan of Salvation and asked him what he thought the purpose of us being on earth is. He said he would have to think about it more because he’s never thought about it before. Good thing we’re able to help him find that answer! It’s a little sad though because we learned that he’s 26, which means we have to pass him off to the YSA sisters. As long as he’s being taught it’s good, I’m just a little sad we won’t be teaching him. We also might have to pass of the other person we’re teaching to YSA. I’m praying just a little that she’ll be 31 so we get to keep her. We’ll find out in our lesson with her on Wednesday!

That’s all I have for this week. I’m off to play Catch Phrase and then do some shopping!

My comp is allergic to gluten and this was the Elders’ answer to having all-inclusive treats at district council (a Friday morning missionary meeting).

This week we found a new person who wants to learn more! We have a lesson with him on Wednesday and I’m really excited! He works at Blaze Pizza and gave us a coupon for a buy one get one pizza, which makes him doubly awesome. I’ll let y’all know next week how the lesson goes.

We had a tri-ward activity this week that we’ve been planning for a month. Sis Williams came up with the idea and then the 8 missionaries in the 3 wards pitched in to help. Our ward did the most: basically did all of the set up and tear down. I was really proud to be in Laurel Glen that day. Our ward is awesome! We had a potluck dinner and then there were some live musical performances, after which we showed two segments from Meet the Mormons. It was fun, but a little stressful so I’m kinda glad it’s behind us. There are plenty of activities coming up in the next few months that will keep us busy!

In other exciting news, General Conference is this weekend! That’s when the whole church spends 8-10 hours listening to the living Prophet and Apostles. It’s really cool to hear what God wants us to hear in these days. The Lord still speaks to His people and guides them with modern day revelation. I’m excited to see what He wants to teach us at this time. I hope y’all get a chance to tune into lds.org and listen!

Uplifting the sisters with our presence:

Our tri-ward activity (food on the tables, stage under the lights, and screen on the right)

Our matching fall shirts (it’s getting cooler!)

“Well you see, this is kind of awkward… you want to talk about Jesus and I have a beer in my hand.”

It’s funny the things you hear as a missionary. People come up with the best excuses and say some weird things. This guy didn’t want to have Jesus and beer happen in the same moment.

It’s interesting to me that people do things, even when they know deep down that it’s wrong. It’s the human in us, I guess. But at the same time, it’s the Spirit in us. I’ve talked a lot this week about how deep down, we know that we are more than this. Our purpose in life isn’t to come, live, then die. We came from somewhere, a place where we were surrounded by love and light and family. We are here on the earth to prepare to have that and so much more. We are truly sons and daughters of loving heavenly parents who want us to come home. We are divine beings that have the potential to have eternal life and exaltation.

I get so excited talking about this because it makes me feel bigger than I am. I’m not insignificant. I truly do have worth, and no matter how much I don’t believe that at times, or how far from God I feel I have traveled, or how much I feel I need to improve, that is an eternal truth that no one can change. I wish everyone could feel the power and love that comes from the statement “I am a child of God”.

Now for some exciting news: Steph, Persa, and Diego moved into my ward! If y’all don’t remember them, they’re my recent converts from back in February. I’m so excited to see them again and get to visit them! We had a funny moment the other day when we went to go visit Steph. We saw her and her friend Jake through the partially open blinds as we walked up to the door, but when we knocked on the door, Jake was the one who answered. We looked around and couldn’t see Steph so I said, “Hi! Is Steph here?” He gave a look down the hallway and Steph came around the corner and let us in. Later she told us that she had thought we were someone else so she quickly put her plate on the counter and ran to her bedroom. We laughed and told her that if she was going to run away from people, she should close the blinds. Jake said she deserved getting caught because she abandoned him. She’s so funny and I’m so glad I get to be around her again!

I think that is it for this week. We’ve been pounding the pavement, but so far we haven’t found anyone who wants to hear more. We were talking about it to one of the elders and he said “if they can’t handle the awesomeness of missionaries, they won’t be able to handle the awesomeness of the gospel!” True statement!

Someone wishing it was fall:

We didn’t close the freezer all the way so everything got frosted (yes that’s a lot of ice cream, but stress on the mission is a real thing)

We reached our goal of talking to 20 people one day this week (and no one yelled at us!)

I’m not sure what I’m doing in this picture, but that’s a big tree!

Here is another big tree and the reason people should cut dead leaves off their palm trees:

Someone had a school bus in their driveway and Sis Stockdale was very confused:

Pretty flowers we saw (there were many wasps so that picture was very risky to take)

I had a very interesting dinner this week. We went over to the Whitmores’ house, who are some of my favorite members, and had baked potatoes. But as exciting as that seems, it wasn’t the best part. We started talking about what they like to do and Sis Whitmore said she likes skulls. In response to our puzzled looks, she went into a room off the kitchen and brought out a dog’s skull. Apparently she was given a golden retriever’s full head in college and she had to boil the flesh off of it and get the skull out. It’s one of her favorite things to do. She also did that with a grizzly bear’s head as well. We passed the skulls around (except to Sis Stockdale) and got to look at them. My favorite was the crocodile skull. It was from the Nile River! My favorite quote from the night was when we were putting the skulls away and Sis Flitton was wiping down the table and said, “oh, I missed some bone over there.” Good times.

And it gets even better than that! The Whitmores have 10 pets snakes and brought some of them out to meet us. I got to hold snakes! It was one of the coolest experiences of my life! Sis Stockdale was not a fan and didn’t hold any, but the rest of us did. The ones they brought out were named Gracie, Miss Piggy, and Indy. My favorite one was Miss Piggy. She is a Hognose snake, which only grow to about 14″, and has a beautiful underside that looks like fancy marble. You might be able to see it in some of the pictures. Snake therapy is a real thing. Who knew that holding snakes could be so relaxing?! It was definitely one for the books.

We went over to Sis McCarty’s house this week and painted more canvases. I liked the other one I made, but the one from this week was my favorite. It has such pretty bright colors! Paint therapy is also a real thing. I was very blessed to have some relaxing time this week with members. Being a missionary is a lot of work so it’s nice when you find things to keep you sane.

We had lunch with Moises (the less-active member we’ve been teaching) on Saturday at Bakersfield Pizza. The pizza was good and the company was good. Moises still doesn’t have his hearing aid so he probably didn’t hear half of what we said, but we still had a good time. He makes me laugh and reminds me of Larry from Ridgecrest. Old men are so cute!

Well, that’s all there was this week. We starting teaching another member who wants to come back to church and were able to have a really spiritual lesson with her on Saturday about God’s love. She knows in her head that He loves her, but she’s having a hard time feeling it because she’s angry at Him for things that have happened. It was really cool to get to testify to her that He really does love all of His children (aka us) and that if she looks for it she will be able to see it, which is true for all of us.

“Did she just say I’m crazy?”

We got to go on exchanges this week! I was with Sis Williamson, and Sis Stockdale was with Sis Flitton. I always like exchanges because I get to see a different side to the STLs (Sister Training Leaders) than I normal get to see. They are supposed to be the example to us all the time, and sometimes they come off robot-ish. Exchanges are a good reminder that they’re just normal missionaries like us, but with higher stress levels.

We ate dinner at a wedding reception, which was a party (literally!) and then finished getting our stuff back together to head home. Overall it was a really good day with them.

On Thursday night we went over to a less active member’s house and painted with her. She’s really crafty, and said she knew an easy way to paint, so we got together and just had a blast. We’re going to go back again this week and put quotes on them!

We had a lesson with another less active member Wednesday night (sorry these are totally out of order) and he is just so funny. We tell him all the time he’s our favorite person, and he calls us his “living angels”. He has some health problems, and this week his hearing aid broke so we spent the whole lesson yelling to him. It was a good time. Hopefully his kids in the other room were paying attention and will want to learn more! We would say something, then Moises would say what he thought we had said, then we would say what we had said louder because he totally didn’t hear us right at all. He’s also a huge jokester, so we’re pretty sure he could hear better than he said he could, but he wanted to mess with us a little. The quote in my subject line is from our lesson with him. Sis Stockdale was even drawing pictures for him. We were going to teach the first half of the Plan of Salvation, but we only got through the Fall of Adam and Eve. So this week we’re going to talk about our purpose here on earth and hope his hearing aid is fixed.

That’s all I have to report this week. We have lots of stuff planned for this upcoming week so we’re going to be busy busy busy!

This week was pretty tame. We were missionaries all day every day, and lived the mission life. We did have one experience that was cool, though.

One night we went to see someone we had been teaching but hadn’t seen in a few weeks. We would text her quotes everyday, but her life has been super crazy so we haven’t been able to actually meet with her. We decided to stop by one night and she was home! And moving the next day! She invited us in for a few minutes and we just talked about what was going on. She had been looking for a place to live ever since we met her, so we were super excited she found a place, but sad that she was leaving our area. We talked her into letting us help her move and then were getting ready to leave because she had somewhere she needed to be. Before we left, she told us how much it had meant to her to have us support her. There was one time we put inspirational quotes all over her door and we learned that that day had been just horrible, until she came home and saw the quotes. We were sending her a quote early in the week and couldn’t think of anything to say with it, so we just sent the quote and felt super lame. She said it was exactly what she needed to hear, and she made the quote the background on her work computer. It was really amazing to get the opportunity to know that the little (to us) things that we had done for her made such an impact and helped her get through one of the hardest times of her life. As we were saying goodbye, she hugged us very tightly and said that she could feel God as she hugged us. She said, “this right here is the closest I have ever felt to God” and thanked us for helping her feel Him in her life.

I think more often than not, we don’t know the impact we make on people’s lives, especially as missionaries. I am so grateful that Heavenly Father let me see that the imperfect, insignificant things I’m doing are changing people’s lives. It’s a testimony to me that letting Christ into our lives can change us and empower us and help us become who we have the potential to become. We have a loving Heavenly Father who wants to help us, not an impassive God who simply watches us struggle.

That’s all I have for this week. I’ll tell you more amazing experiences for this upcoming week next time!

When Sis Stockdale decided I didn’t need to breathe:

“It’s a good day to be good”

I’m writing on Tuesday this week because our P-Day got switched. We had a special zone conference where a general authority came to speak to us! The zone conference was every missionary from Bakersfield and Ridgecrest, and the general authority was a member of the seventy named Elder Klebingat. If you didn’t understand that sentence, ask your Mormon friends to explain.

Elder Klebingat is from Germany, and right at the beginning of the conference he told us that the American habit of beating around the bush was not one of his habits. That was a very true statement. He was very direct and firm, but it was in a good way. Everything he talked about helped me with things I’ve been struggling with, and it gave me motivation to be the best missionary I can be for the rest of my mission. My subject line is something that he said.

There was some other awesome stuff that happened this week too! The air has been super bad in Bakersfield because of all the fires, so President Layton told us to spend more time in our cars and less time walking from place to place. Problem: we don’t have a car. So we called Sister Layton and asked what we should do about staying out of the bad air (it was making me cough) and she told us that President arranged for us to have a car! 11 areas were closed last transfer and so there were many cars just sitting in the parking lot. Most of the are being sold, but we got one of the 2 that aren’t. We’re not sure how long we will have it, but I’m very thankful that we have it for now! It’s going to be a sad day when they tell us to bring it back though.

I think Sis Stockdale appreciates that we have a car more than I do, because she had an unfortunate incident happen this week with her bike. Since it doesn’t rain very much in Bakersfield, there aren’t many gutters, so when water from sprinklers runs onto the side of the road, it just sits there forever. As it’s sitting there forever, green algae and slime starts to grow in it. It looks nasty! And according to Sis Stockdale, it feels nasty too. We were biking down a street and we had to go through a huge puddle of this disgusting water. I turned and slowed down a lot before going through the puddle so it wouldn’t splash up on me, but Sis Stockdale (who was behind me) didn’t slow down enough. I heard a small yell and scraping sound, and turned around to see her sitting in the giant puddle of water with her bike on the ground next to her. She had biked right over the biggest part of the puddle and the slime took the bike out from under her. We called the sisters to come take us home and Sis Stockdale had bruising all down her leg. It was not a good night for her.

Some other fun stuff that happened was a trio getting put into our district! Sis Williams and Sis Williams are now training Sis Jordan! Sis Jordan had some health issue while in the MTC, so instead of going foreign, she got sent to California. The Williamses didn’t know they would be training until about 5 hours before she arrived. It was quite the scramble for them to get everything ready for her, but they are doing an awesome job. We and the sisters wrote little notes to her and put them on their door. She’s adorable!

I think that’s it for this week. I hope everything it going well at home! If life seems hard and nothing is going your way, this is a really awesome video to watch: https://www.lds.org/media-library/video/2012-01-014-the-will-of-god

There are no such things as coincidences…

One day, we decided to go meet a member that was nearby after dinner, and as we biked down the street he was on, we didn’t see his house number anywhere. Rather than turn around and try to find it, we decided to visit some members one street over. We visited with them for a little bit and then left to go to a meeting. The next day at a Relief Society activity the mom came up to us and said we must have been inspired to stop by. After we left, he daughter told her she knew it was us at the door before they even opened it, and as we were talking she had a strong impression to meet with us. She has some things that she’s dealing with that we would have to adjust our teaching for, and so she had been nervous to ask us. This was such a blessing for us, especially because it had been a rough day that day. It’s amazing that we can follow the promptings of the Spirit without even realizing it!

We ate dinner with some members this week who are super awesome. We asked them how they met and it started story time. They’ve had some crazy stuff happen to them, like their son almost getting kidnapped, and having to give CPR to a snake. But the one where they met was awesome: she had a coworker they called “Dr Eye Candy” and there was a murder where they worked. Two of her coworkers were having an affair and they killed the lady’s husband. The guy was from Australia so he ran back there when the investigation started getting intense and can’t be arrested unless he comes back to the US. Crazy! Apparently there was a book written about it.

Then they told this story about going to a movie in Aurora Colorado. They had decided to see the midnight showing of The Dark Knight so they drove to the movie theater and as they pulled up, they saw a guy hiding in the shadows next to the movie theater. They got a weird feeling about him, but shrugged it off. The dad went in to get the tickets and the son asked “is dad going to be ok?” The mom said “of course, he’s just going to buy some tickets.” A few minutes later the dad came back without tickets and told them he just had a feeling that they shouldn’t go to the movie that night. So they went back to their hotel room and got a good night’s sleep. When they woke up the next morning, they saw on the news something that I’m sure a lot of you saw or heard about: there had been a mass shooting in a movie theater in Aurora (the same one they went to) at the midnight showing of The Dark Knight. They had almost been in that movie theater, and if they hadn’t listened to the subtle promptings of the Spirit, they might have been numbered among the people who had died. The Lord definitely protects His children.

That is all I have for this week. Sis Stockdale’s skirt got caught in her bike gears while we were crossing the street and then she ate gluten (which she is allergic to) at a dinner one night and was in lots of pain the rest of the night. So my companion almost died twice this week, but she didn’t so it’s all good. I hope y’all have great week!

“Be not afraid… For the Lord thy God is with thee”

I’ve grown up hearing stories about missionaries being chased by dogs or having to kick dogs or getting bitten by dogs, and so far on my mission I haven’t encountered anything but sweet friendly dogs. Until Saturday.

We were walking around a neighborhood and decided to go up to this one house and knock. I was in front so I started walking up to the door first, and out of the corner of my eye I saw something round the corner of the house and I thought “just a dog, no biggie”. Well, the fence to the backyard went alongside the pathway to the door and when that dog hit the fence, it moved about a foot toward me. I ran the few steps left to the porch and turned around to see the biggest dog I have ever seen in my life hanging over the fence trying to bite my face off. Sis Stockdale had seen the dog before she had started up the path, so she was out of the danger zone. I had two options: stay on the porch until the dog got bored and left us alone, or walk through the valley of the shadow of death past the dog to get to my companion. I gathered up my courage and inched along the side of the house as far away from the violently shaking fence as I could get. Thankfully, I made it safely out and I am here to tell you this story today. I have never really been scared of a dog in my life, but I could gladly go the rest of my life without seeing that dog again. I am now officially a missionary.

Another scary thing that happened this week is that Stabby McStabster might be back (that’s what Sis Williams and I named our ghost in our haunted apartment in Lancaster). Sis Stockdale and I got back last night and the gate to our backyard was wide open. I thought maybe the sisters left it open when they got the bikes out that morning, but Sis Stockdale distinctly remembered closing the gate after them and I didn’t remember noticing it open when we came back for lunch. So we went inside and I thought it was no big deal because the door to our backyard is locked… or so I thought. We got out our pepper spray and walked through the house opening every closet and turning on every light. No one was inside. It’s possible that the back door could’ve been left unlocked, but I remember locking it about a week ago and we haven’t gone out that door since. I don’t know what’s going on, but for now I’m chalking it up to forgetfulness and the wind. I’ll let y’all know if any other strange things start happening and we have the haunting part 2.

Other than that, the missionary life as been the same old same old. I was sick for a few days this week and sickness and bikes don’t go together so we used that time to draw a map of our area on one of our giant whiteboards. Sis Stockdale drew it and it looks fantastic. I don’t think I have a picture of it, but I’ll send one next week when it’s completely done. We’ve been spending a lot of time visiting members and letting Sis Stockdale get used to the new area. I’m hoping to find some more people to teach this week because we aren’t teaching anyone right now. It’s hard to be a missionary when no one wants to hear about how amazing the gospel is. That’s alright though because I know there is someone in our area just waiting for us to change their life.

As I’m sure a lot of you know, last week was my birthday. Although it was a few days late, I got an amazing present from Sis Evans who y’all might remember from a few transfers ago. It was around 10:20 Thursday night when I heard some voices near our apartment. I locked the door because I didn’t want to die that night, and a few seconds later someone knocked. I couldn’t think of anyone we knew who would be knocking on our door so late, so I got the pepper spray ready and Sis Stockdale opened the door. I can’t think of a single time my brain has gone completely blank from shock, but now I know what it feels like. Megan (aka Sis Evans) was standing on the other side of my door. I stood there for a hot second before running outside and hugging the snot out of her. She said she didn’t know what to get me for my birthday and thought “why not have the present be me?” She was going to come in the morning, but said she couldn’t wait. We talked for a few minutes before she left and then her and her friend Hailey took us out for lunch the next day.

I have a testimony that Heavenly Father loves me. There is no denying it. He knew that seeing Megan and getting a chance to talk to her would mean the world to me and so He made that happen. There are no such things as coincidences because there is a God in heaven who loves us more than we can comprehend. He has a hand in our everyday lives, we just have to have our eyes open enough to see it.

Not sure if you can tell, but that dark thing in the shadows is the giant scary dog:

“I’m a Mormon!”

This week we went to see someone in the ward who wanted missionaries to come over and teach him and his daughter, and help them get back to church. When we knocked on his gate, he came outside and said he was busy at the moment, but asked for our number and as we were giving it to him, a lady came to the door and said “We aren’t Mormons”. The guy turned around and said “I’m a Mormon!” We left right after that, but I really want to know how that conversation went after we left.

Some crazy stuff happened this week. There was an ET (emergency transfer) and a sister in the ward right next to us got put in our companionship for a few days. Her name is Sis Williams, not to be confused with the Sis Williams I was with last transfer. We worked in both of the wards the past few days and she’ll go back to her ward tomorrow with her new companion, Sis Williams (the one I was with last transfer). I’m sure they won’t hear things like “Williams and Williams. Are you related?” or “Williams and Williams, that makes it easy!” all the time.

It should be tons of fun though because we’re in the same district so we’ll get to see each other at least once a week! I am sad though because Sis Desposorio is going to Bakes YSA. I love her and had such a fun time being with her. She’s going to BYU though so we’ll see each other at school next year! And she’s not going too far so I’m sure we’ll see each other around the mission too. I’m staying in Laurel Glen and will be getting Sis Stockdale.

We had a fun time on Saturday night following a prompting of the Spirit Sis Desposorio got. We had to run to the store for something and she felt like she needed to give this older couple a Book of Mormon. She dismissed it though, and we were driving away when we felt like we should follow her prompting. So we drove around the parking lot, at night, waiting for them to come out. When they did, we walked over to them and started talking to them. They did not seem interested at all and very clearly stated it. When we were driving home after that, we wondered why we felt prompted to talk to them when they weren’t interested at all and pretty rude. Now why would the Holy Ghost prompt Sis Desposorio to talk to them? I’ve had moments like that too where I feel prompted to knock on a door and the people don’t want anything to do with us. I used to think it meant it wasn’t a prompting and just a weird feeling I got, but I don’t think that’s it. I think that God tests us to see if we’re paying attention. If we will do small things for Him, like knock on a door or talk to a certain person, He knows that we will do bigger things for Him. He will know that He can rely on us for anything that He needs. One of my favorite quotes from President Monson is “I always want the Lord to know that if He needs an errand run, Tom Monson will run that errand for Him.” I want the Lord to rely on me that same way and know that if He needs anything done, I can do it for Him.

I hope y’all have a fabulous week and don’t get too hot! I’ll let you know how the first week of transfers went next week.
